Screening: Normal Love
Saturday, July 29, 2023 | 3pm
A screening of Jack Smith’s underground cult film, Normal Love (1963–65), accompanies the current exhibition, Matt Saunders: The Distances. Saunders describes the exhibition as an “introspective retrospective” or a “sentimental education”—mining themes the artist focused on early in his career, such as the performativity and fluidity of gender as manifested through various generations. American filmmaker and artist Jack Smith (1932–1989), blended the glitz of Hollywood's Golden Age with underground culture. His film, Normal Love, drew inspiration from horror movies of the 1930s and 40s, and the work of Maria Montez, a B-movie star of Dominican origin. Free with registration. Register here.

The Brothers Sushi, Woodland Hills
Sushi Part 3: In this third (and last, for now) installment of sushi spots in the LA vicinity, we focus on the Valley—Studio City to Woodland Hills—and Arcadia. Last week we covered Hollywood to Santa Monica. By mistake, we transposed the write-ups for two of the restaurants, Hara Sushi and Hamasaku. Please take a look at a corrected version of last week's sushi listings here. In week one, we covered Atwater Village, Silver Lake and DTLA. Check out the first week's sushi list here.
Asanebo | Studio City
With two Michelin stars in its background, this three–plus decades strong Studio City sushi institution is led by Chef Tetsuya Nakao, who helped start Nobu Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills. Asanebo continues the tradition of its Beverly Hills mother ship.
Sushi Note | Sherman Oaks
An elevated sushi bar with a Michelin star and Wine Spectator awards to show it. Flair, ambience and a strong wine program—as well as the sushi—make this a great spot for date night.
Sushi Spot | Tarzana
With 30–plus years on Ventura Boulevard, this traditional sushi bar, helmed by Chef Taku Shimuchi, stands out for its quality fish selection and reasonably priced omakase.
The Brothers Sushi | Woodland Hills
Basking in a 2022 Michelin star, this Valley sushi spot led by Chef Mark Okuda specializes in seasonal fish from Japan, dry aged fish like blue fin tuna, Ora King Salmon from New Zealand, Kanpachi and hamachi. Also featuring locally grown produce, like Ice plants from San Marcos California. Sake Advisor on site. Santa Monica location too!
Go's Mart | Canoga Park
Tucked away in an unpretentious strip mall in Canoga Park with only the sign, Sushi, to indicate its presence, you'll find imaginative sushi as envisioned by Chefs Tsuyoshi and Kawano. No printed menu—fresh daily selection. Don't be surprised if your sushi is topped with a smattering of 24k gold leaf flakes and truffle oil. Just two tables and a compact 10-foot sushi bar. Opened in 1997.
Got Sushi? | Northridge
Contemporary take on sushi / Japanese cuisine with a few twists, like truffle Parmesan fries on the menu along with the usual sushi suspects. Yellowtail ceviche with salsa, yuzu soy, cilantro, lemon oil and sesame seed, anyone?
Chiba | North Hollywood
A menu that ventures beyond sushi, with a selection of noodles, sukiyaki, tempura, salads and more. If you're interested in rolls, there are fun ones, like the bagel roll: Smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber and green onions with rolled rice on the outside and smelt roe—or the Sunset Strip roll: Broiled eel and cucumber roll with avocado slices wrapped on the outside.
Sushi Kisen | Arcadia
Steered by Executive Chef Hiro Yamada (Sushi Gen, Shiki), Arcadia's first Edomae Style sushi restaurant emphasizes traditional Japanese techniques and high quality ingredients. Most of the fresh fish comes from Toyosu Market, Tokyo. The best seaweed, premium rice and red vinegars are sourced for the classic seaweed outside rolls.
